I have always loved ballet. I never got the chance to dance when I was little or in my youth, so after I´ve turned 50, I challenged myself; was it even possible to start dancing ballet at this age?

Inspired by the first of many visits to the Kaisergruft in Vienna, I painted this magnificent scull found as a decoration on an emperors cascet. Those cascets are such overwhelming pieces of art in themselves, but these sculptures made me think of the Nazgül in Lord of the Rings. My vision was this of ancient rulers of empires, powerful and intimidating, but also reminding us all of that you can nothing bring with you to where you are going.

In my former workshop, the “Krähe Werkstatt”, finished sketching up “The Ruler”, that was the working title.
